Macalester wins another 5-4 match

Macalester vs. Hamline box score

Macalester won its third straight 5-4 thriller in MIAC competition when it edged out the Pipers Tuesday at Hamline as the Scots extend their winning streak to nine matches. Mac improves to 9-4 on the campaign and 3-2 in the competitive MIAC.

In late March, the Scots returned from a perfect 5-0 Spring Break trip record to earn tough 5-4 decisions over St. Mary's and St. Benedict. Earlier in the season, the Scots dropped 5-4 heartbreakers to conference rivals St. Thomas and Concordia, but now the momentum has turned their way in close matches. Eight of the team's 13 matches have come down to 5-4 or 6-3 decisions.

The Scots have relied heavily on the top half of its lineup the past two years but against Hamline it came down to contentious matches at fifth and sixth singles which went Macalester's way.

At No. 5 singles, Mac's Becky Schneider (Sr., Larchmont, N.Y. / Mamaroneck) won 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 6-4, and at No. 6, Lauren Dutkiewicz (So., St. Charles, Ill. / North) rallied back for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 triumph.

Macalester also picked up singles wins at No. 1 from undefeated Angie Horner (Jr., Bismarck, N.D. / Century) at No. 1 and at No. 3 from Amanda Wenzel (Jr., Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest) at No. 3. Horner is 13-0 this spring and Wenzel is 11-2.

The Scots are a combined 49-28 in singles play this spring.

Horner and Stephanie Lee (Jr., Camarillo, Calif. / Oaks Christian) played to an 8-4 win at first doubles.

Mac returns to action next Tuesday (April 14) at Bethel in search of a double-digit winning streak.
