ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team took the top four singles matches to defeat Concordia College, 4-3 in the season and MIAC opener Saturday afternoon at Hayden Tennis Courts.
In doubles, the Cobbers earned the doubles point despite a Scots' victory at No. 2 doubles by first years Isabel Gaytan (El Paso, Texas/El Paso) and Adel Schneider (Appleton, Wis./St. Mary's Catholic), 6-1. A Concordia win at No. 5 singles put the Cobbers ahead, 2-0. Gayton was the first Scot to earn a point with a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, followed by sophomore Isabella Tamburrino (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's Episcopal School) at No. 1 singles, also in straight sets. Schneider put Macalester ahead, 3-2 with a win at No. 2 singles, then sophomore Darrian Streater (Redmond, Ore./Redmond Proficiency Academy) clinched the dual for the Scots with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles. First year Wells McDonald (Brooklyn, N.Y./Proctor Academy) battled Olivia Walter at sixth singles before falling in a marathon, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 1-0 (13-11).
Macalester will play at Saint Mary's University in another MIAC dual on Sunday, Sept. 13. The first matches begin at 2:30 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
