MIAC streak hits six with sweep over Concordia

Macalester vs. Concordia box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Away from conference competition for 10 days, Macalester returned to MIAC play by getting outstanding pitching in a 5-1 and 9-2 sweep over the Concordia Cobbers in Moorhead.

Robert Williams (Fy., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) went deep twice in the first game for his first two collegiate homers and James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) improved to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.09. In game two, Alex Ingram (So., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) followed Murrey's performance with another stellar pitching effort and took advantage of seven Macalester runs in the second inning which gave him a comfortable margin.

Macalester has won six straight MIAC games and moves into a four-way tied for second in the conference standings at 6-4. The team is 15-13 overall. St. Thomas leads the league at 8-2. The Cobbers fall to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC.

Murrey came into his start ranked third in the NCAA Division III in strikeouts per nine innings with 14.3, but Concordia whiffed just six times in what was never-the-less another pitching gem by the Macalester ace. Murrey scattered seven hits, six of which were singles, and didn't walk a batter for his third start in a row. In his last four starts, all complete games, he was struck out 43 and walked only three.  Murrey has given up just one earned run in 21 MIAC innings pitched.

Williams drove in three runs on his two round trippers, while the Scots also received a pair of hits from Mitch Glasser (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School).

Ingram evened his record at 3-3 by yielding just six hits and no walks for his complete game decision in game two.

The Scots, who led 7-0 early, had leadoff batter Graham Brown (Fy., Annandale, Minn.) go 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brown is now batting .481 on the season. Adding a couple hits each were Glasser and Devin English (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha).

Mac returns to action tomorrow against St. Olaf at home at 2:30 p.m.
