Despite 21 strikeouts by Mac pitchers, Scots fall twice to St. John’s

Macalester out-hit St. John's 6-5 in both games in the MIAC opener late Friday evening at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, but left 16 runners stranded on base on the night as the Johnnies picked up 5-0 and 3-0 shutout victories over the Scots. Macalester is now 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the league, while SJU is 7-7 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.

This was the second of four doubleheaders at the MIAC Baseball Showcase at the Metrodome this weekend. Augsburg swept St. Mary's earlier in the day. Tomorrow's match-ups are Hamline vs. Carleton and Bethel vs. St. Thomas.

Game one was completed in just 95 minutes and the second game took 1:45.

Macalester pitchers struck out 21 batters and walked just one during the twinbill as starting pitchers James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) and Alex Ingram (So., Chicago, Ill. / Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) were strong in defeat. Murrey allowed five hits in seven innings in the opener and all five runs allowed were unearned. Ingram worked 5 1/3 innings before surrendering a two-run SJU homer and finished with nine K's against just one walk.

Murrey, a two-time All-MIAC pick, has 44 strikeouts this season in 29 innings of work and has fanned 24 in his last two complete-game seven-inning starts.

St. John's starters Alex Wahl and Brett Kramer, however, were even better and forced 20 ground ball outs in addition to leaving 16 Mac runners on base to earn the shutouts. They fanned 11 batters and walked only two.

Graham Brown (Fy., Annandale, Minn.) went 3-for-3 in the nightcap for the Scots.  Nate Wilson-Traisman (Jr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) extended his hitting streak to 16 games with singles in each game and his now batting .483 on the season.

Macalester is scheduled to play Wednesday (April 2) at St. Thomas, but needs a turn in the weather for that to happen.
