Devin English (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) went 6-for-7 on the night, and pitchers
Alex Ingram (So., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) and
Trevor McCalmont (Fy., Piedmont, Calif.) gained their first collegiate wins as Macalester swept Elmhurst (Ill.) 8-1 and 10-7 at the Metrodome. The Scots are now 3-1 on the young season.
The Scots held Elmhurst to five hits in the opener, getting five strong innings on the mound from Ingram, and in the nightcap led by seven runs going into the final frame before
Mitch Glaser (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) extinguished the fire to earn his first college save with the tying run at first base and the bases loaded, coming in from his second base position and getting the final two outs on a 4-6-3 double play with close plays at both bases.
The night got off to a great start when right fielder
Michael Kennedy (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) stretched out for a diving catch on the warning track to take away at least two Elmhurst runs in the top of the first inning. Macalester responded by posting four runs in the bottom of the first and the Scots were never threatened as Ingram gave up just five hits and a run in five innings of work.
Nick Meerson (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings.
Robert Williams (Fy., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Kennedy also collected a pair of hits, including a deep triple to left. Williams drove in five runs in the two games and had a double in each game.
English, who went 3-for-3 in game one, went 3-for-4 with a couple doubles in the nightcap to boost his average to .667 (8-for-12) through four games from the leadoff spot in the order. Kennedy went 3-for-4 with three runs driven in, while three other Scots had a pair of hits. Macalester slugged four doubles in the fifth inning to go up 10-3.
Through four games, English, Williams and Kennedy are a combined 20-for-37 (.541).
In twinbills with Edgewood (Wis.) and Elmhurst, the Scots have committed just two errors and have a .983 fielding percentage with six double plays. Macalester is batting .336 and the pitching staff has a 3.33 ERA.
Mac returns to the Metrodome Thursday (March 5) for a doubleheader with Minnesota-Morris at 12:15 p.m. Admission is $5 and fans should enter Gate F.
