Scott Petesch (Jr., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) blasted home a penalty kick after teammate
Jake Rocke (Jr., Lincoln, Neb. / East) was dragged down in the box late in the first overtime period as Macalester toppled Lawrence (Wis.) 1-0 in St. Paul. Macalester goes to 2-0 on the young season and Lawrence falls to 0-2.
Petesch, who also scored two nights earlier in a 2-1 win over Ripon, converted his match-taking PK at the 98:46 mark on this hit Sunday afternoon at Macalester Stadium.
This was the second of two Mac games this weekend at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest 50th Anniversary Classic – a series of 13 games played over Labor Day weekend in St. Paul and Northfield. The Scots were on the attack most of the day, earning an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and 23-4 margin in shots. Lawrence's goalkeeper was forced to make nine saves, three off the foot of
Reid Usedom (Fy., Asheville, N.C./ A.C. Reynolds).
Mark Mullaney (So., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) posted a shutout in his first career collegiate start in goal.
Macalester plays host Friday (Sept. 5) to Oberlin (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 7) to Simpson (Ia.) at 2 p.m. before beginning MIAC play Sept. 10 at home against Carleton.
