ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team registered a season-best three goals in a 3-0 shutout victory over Concordia College in a MIAC match Tuesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 5-3-4 on the season and 3-2-1 in conference, while the Cobbers drop to 2-7-4 overall and 0-5-2 in the MIAC.
Macalester controlled the game from the start, taking nine shots and putting four on goal over the first 38 minutes. The hard work finally paid off in the 39th minute for the Scots, as first year midfielder
Kiernan Gaughan (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) received a pass from first year midfielder
Jeremy Cordeiro (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) on the left side about 15 yards out. Gaughan deked a defender then blasted a shot into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. It was his first goal as a Scot.
In the second half, Concordia came out strong and put a pair of shots on goal early, with sophomore goalkeeper
Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) making both saves. Then in the 62nd minute, first year forward
John Albright (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) dribbled down the left side and centered the ball to sophomore midfielder
Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison), who sent a shot inside the right post for his first tally of the year.
In the 71st minute, first year forward
Charlie Hall (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) forced a Cobber turnover near the top of the penalty area. The ball went right to Albright, who fired a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Concordia did not take a shot the rest of the way, as Macalester earned the 3-0 victory.
Ratner finished with two saves, as the Scots outshot the Cobbers, 22-4 while putting 11 shots on frame. Concordia goalkeeper Dante Kummer recorded eight saves.
Macalester hosts No. 2 St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 17 in a rematch of last year's MIAC Playoff final, won by the Scots. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
