Men’s Soccer: No. 2 St. Olaf Tops Scots with Second-Half Surge

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three goals in a four-minute stretch early in the second half, including two own goals, gave No. 2 St. Olaf College a 3-1 win over the Macalester men's soccer team in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The result leaves the Scots with a 5-4-4 record, including a 3-3-1 mark in conference play. The Oles remain unbeaten at 13-0-2 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC.

In a scoreless first half, Macalester generated several scoring chances while holding an 8-6 edge in shots taken and putting three shots on goal. Senior forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) put two shots on frame in the first 10 minutes, while senior forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) had a scoring chance in the 27th minute.

In the 54th minute, the Oles broke the scoreless tie, with Blaine Batchelor hitting the crossbar on a corner kick and Calvin Hess finishing the rebound. Less than four minutes later, Tustin Todd drove a corner kick into the penalty area that deflected off a Macalester defender and into the goal for a 2-0 lead. Just 30 seconds later, Todd dribbled down the left side and passed the ball into the penalty area, where it bounced off a Scots' player and went in for another own goal.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Liptzin dribbled up the middle into Ole territory and found Frantz, who cut the ball back towards the middle and placed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 15 yards out. It was Frantz's second goal of the season. That's as close as Macalester would get, as St. Olaf earned the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) registered five saves for the Scots, as St. Olaf finished with an 18-10 edge in shots taken. Beckett Carlson had three saves for the Oles.

Macalester faces Carleton College on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in another MIAC contest. The game starts at 4:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
