Soccer: Despite a Second-half Comeback Bid, the Scots Fall Short in Northfield

Northfield, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team visited Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. for the Scots' eighth MIAC matchup of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Scots put forth a strong comeback effort in the second half, but the Knight's three first half goals proved to be too much for Mac. The Scots are now 5-5-4 on the season and 3-4-1 in conference, while the Knights improve to 10-4-1 overall and 6-2 in the MIAC.

The Knights started their scoring early with a goal in the fourth minute on a well-placed lower-right hand corner shot. They followed it up six minutes later with another goal in the lower left of the goal. The Knights added their third goal of the half with a goal in the 31st minute with a chip over Macalester's keeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park).

Macalester may have been down 3-0 after the first half, but they did not stay asleep, as they outshot the Knights 15-1 in the second half as they tried to beat Carleton who were clearly parking the bus against the onslaught of shots. Out of all of Mac's shots in the second half, six were saved, and one was blocked, keeping the Knights keeper busy.

One Scot was able to get through to twine, with a late goal coming from Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison) off his own shot in the 86th minute to ruin the clean sheet for the Knights. Mac ended the game outshooting 21-8 and leading 9-4 in shots on goal despite their 3-1 loss.

Macalester's keeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) added 1 save as Macalester's squad was led in shots by Senior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) with four. Jeremy Cordeiro (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata).

For their next match, the Scots will host Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Saturday, Oct. 24 in a conference game at 4:30 p.m.
