Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) belted a grand slam in the second inning of game one to start off a Macalester vs. St. Mary's slugfest at Winona State University. When the day was over, the Scots had themselves an 8-7 and 12-8 MIAC sweep over the Cardinals.
James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) fanned 11 batters in six-plus innings of work in the opener to improve to 5-0 on the season and in the nightcap, Macalester received three RBIs apiece from
Will Chen (Fy., Edina, Minn.) and
Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West).
Macalester shook off its losses to No. 18 St. Thomas just a day ago and improves to 2-2 in the MIAC and 9-12 overall. SMU drops to 3-10 on the year and 0-4 in the league.
Murrey pitched the first six innings in the first game and left after SMU first two batters reached base in the seventh and with an 8-2 lead. He yielded just three hits (opponents are hitting just .148 off Murrey through 30 1/3 innings) and struck out 11, bringing his seasonal total to 34. Murrey's ERA is only 1.19.
English went 2-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) was 2-for-3, while the team received doubles from Simkins,
Robert Engel (So., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) and
Trevor Miehe (Fy., Holmen, Wis.). Engel and Miehe each scored a pair of runs.
The nightcap saw Macalester go up 5-2 with a five-spot in the top of the fourth inning, only to see the Cardinals respond with five of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The Scots, however, quickly re-gained control with six fifth-inning runs to go up 11-7. Chen went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Simkins, Chen and
Jason Friedman (So., New York, N.Y. / The Browning School) had multiple-hit games. The Scots received 3 1/3 innings of solid relief pitching from winner Engel and
Brad Johnson (Jr., Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Lenape).
Mac's MIAC games scheduled for Monday (April 7) at St. John's have been postponed by rain and will be made up Wednesday (April 9) in Collegeville. The Macalester vs. Augsburg twinbill set for Tuesday (April 8) will be played at Dundas Park, near Northfield.
