Macalester took the first game of an MIAC doubleheader with Concordia on a very windy day at Midway Stadium by a 5-4 tally, but the Cobbers came back to win a 3 ½ marathon in the nightcap, claiming a 17-12 come-from-behind slugfest victory despite a 5-for-5 hitting performance by Mac third baseman
Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha).
The Scots are now 10-15 on the season and 3-5 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers stand at 10-7 overall, 3-3 in MIAC games.
Concordia started off the day by crossing the plate twice in the top of the first inning of the opener, but Mac starter
James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) took control of the game after that, improving to a perfect 6-0 on the season by allowing just four hits and striking out 11 in his complete game victory. In addition to his 6-0 record, Murrey has fanned 45 batters in 37 1/3 innings while posting a 1.45 ERA. Opponents are batting only .150 against him.
Michael Kennedy (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) was the offensive star of the game, breaking a 2-2 tie with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third down the left field line. Eight of the nine starters in the lineup contributed a hit.
English's 5-for-5 hitting effort in game two included three doubles as he raises his team-leading batting average to .395. He also drew a walk and scored five of his team's 12 runs to boost his seasonal total to 28 in 25 games.
John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored, and sent the game into extra innings with a deep two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.
The Scots had leads of 5-0 and 10-4, but could not overcome 19 Concordia hits.
Macalester takes a five-day break before returning to play Sunday (April 20) against Gustavus Adolphus at Midway Stadium at 1 p.m.
