James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) held Loras (Ia.) hitless through six innings of work to lead Macalester to a split with the Duhawks in a late Sunday night doubleheader at the Metrodome. Murrey surrendered just one run in a 7-1 Mac victory in game one, while Loras came back to take the nightcap 5-3.
The Scots are now 1-2 on the season and play another Metrdome twinbill Thursday (March 6) with Minnesota-Morris at 5 p.m. Loras is 1-1.
Murrey picked up right where he left off last year when the All-MIAC pitcher finished second in the conference in strikeouts. Three sixth-inning walks and the increasing pitch count in his season's debut kept him, however, from coming out in the seventh inning and going for the no-hitter.
Joe Borer (Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / Central) and
Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West) each went 3-for-3 in the opener. Borer belted a deep two-run bomb into the 18th-row of the left-field seats in the top of the fifth inning to put the Scots up 7-0. Kent drove in three runs, and Kent and Borer each had one of the team's four doubles.
John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.), who went 2-for-4 in the first game, also went 2-for-4 in game two. The Scots, however, left nine runners stranded on base.
Michael Kennedy (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) had a clutch two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to cut an early Loras lead to 4-3.
Starter
Eric Robinson (So., San Francisco, Calif. / Urban School) and reliever Simkins combined to give up just seven hits and one walk, with Robinson going the first five innings and allowing six hits.
Loras reliever Brad Joniec entered the game in the fifth inning with the bases full and nobody out, and got out of the jam without surrendering a run. He picked up the save by giving up just one hit and no runs in three innings of duty.
