Macalester boosted its conference record to 2-0 on the young season by cruising to an 8-1 win over St. Mary's in Winona. The Scots won everything but a narrow 9-8 decision at second doubles, and have defeated SMU two times in a row after taking a 5-4 victory last year.
Off to a nice start after beating St. Olaf in the season-opener, the Scots are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC. SMU is 2-2 on the spring campaign, 0-2 in conference competition.
Angie Horner (So., Bismarck, N.D. / Century) got the day off to a good start by taking a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Stephanie Lee (So., Camarillo, Calif. / Oaks Christian) won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2; and
Amanda Wenzel (So., Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Anna Peschel (Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / Central) won a tough 6-4, 7-5 match at No. 4;
Jenna Harris (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio / Seven Hills) won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5; and at sixth singles,
Becky Schneider (Jr., Larchmont, N.Y. / Mamaroneck) took a narrow 6-4, 7-6 battle.
The regionally-ranked team of Horner and Lee posted an 8-5 decision and the team of Peschel and Schneider won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Earlier in the day, also on the SMU campus, the Scots took care of a quick 9-0 sweep over Minnesota-Morris. All the matches were swept and and other than one 6-1 win, all the sets were sweeps for the Scots as well. In singles and doubles matches combined, Macalester won 96 games compared to one for UMM.
Mac returns to action Saturday (March 1) against St. Catherine.
