Macalester needed a win and Augsburg needed a tie as these two MIAC rivals battled for a spot in next week's four-team conference playoffs Friday night at Macalester Stadium.

The Auggies saved their post-season hopes with a miraculous goal with just one second left in regulation after hustling to get off a corner kick with :06 to play, but the Scots extended their season with their biggest goal of the year when Emily Bardwell (So., Denver, Colo. / East) netted the Golden Goal in the 93rd minute.

Macalester finishes its conference campaign at 6-3-2 (9-7-2 overall) and plays an MIAC semi-final match on the road Wednesday (Nov. 5). The Scots will be the third- or fourth-seed and can play at either St. Thomas, Carleton or Concordia. If the game is at St. Thomas, it will begin at 1:30 p.m. The MIAC finals are set for Saturday (Nov. 8) and the playoff champ will represent the league in the NCAA Division III post-season. Mac will know who it plays after tomorrow afternoon's matches.  SATURDAY UPDATE - Macalester will be the No. 3 seed and will play its semi-final game Wednesday at Carleton at 2 p.m.  St. Thomas and Concordia play in the other semi-final tilt.

Coach John Leaney and the Scots have made the MIAC playoffs every year since the league began using this format to determine its NCAA representative in 2003. In their sixth straight MIAC playoffs, the Scots won the conference tourney in '03, '04 and '05.  Friday's win clinches a winning season for the 20th year in a row.

Maddy Cochrane (Jr., Grand Marais, Minn. / Cook County) put Macalester on top of the Auggies with her first goal of the season in the 10th minute on a Lauryn Gutierrez (So., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) assist and that looked like it could be the game-winner until Augsburg dramatic score at 89:59. In between scores, there were plenty of scoring chances, but long-time MIAC goalkeeping stars Jenny Lee (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) of Mac and Maggie DeGroot of Augsburg were solid. DeGroot registered six saves and Lee had four.

Fighting off Whitney Holman's nearly-crushing score directly in off a corner kick, Macalester kept its composure and early in extra time, Martha Coe (So., Grand Haven, Mich.) found Bardwell on the left side and Bardwell struck a great shot at 92:47 for her fifth goal of the season and biggest of her career.
