Geiger, Grace
Grace Geiger
(Jr., Seattle, Wash. / Bishop Blanchet) netted the game's only goal in the 80th minute of play on a pass from Lauryn Gutierrez (So., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) as Macalester claimed a big 1-0 win over long-time MIAC rival St. Benedict Friday night in St. Paul. Jenny Lee (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) turned away seven St. Benedict shots on goal to post her 20th shutout in 46 career starts at Mac.

After starting the conference season with a last-minute 2-1 loss at Carleton, the Scots have now shut out four straight MIAC foes to improve to a second-place 4-1 in the league. They trail St. Thomas (4-0-2) for the top spot with a game in hand. Mac is now 7-3 overall. The Blazers drop to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in MIAC play.

Taking advantage of a nice pass from Gutierrez at 79:37, Geiger placed a left-footed shot into the upper-right corner of the net from 18 yards out for her third goal of the season.

Each team received seven saves from their keepers, with the difference being the Macalester 8-7 advantage in shots on goals. Mac out-shot CSB 12-10, but the Blazers had a 6-3 corner kick lead.

Playing this season without the injured All-America forward Grace King (Sr., Northampton, Mass.), last year's MIAC Player of the Year, the Scots have turned to their defense, led by Lee and all-conference defender Liz Hormann (So., Salem, Ore. / South Salem), to lead the charge.  Mac has yielded just two goals in five MIAC matches - tied for the league's best along with St. Thomas.

The Scots face another very challenging task on Tuesday (Oct. 7) when they host two-time defending MIAC champ Concordia-Moorhead at 3 p.m. for a rare Macalester weekday afternoon home contest.
