Macalester vs. St. Scholastica statistics
Trevor Miehe (So., Holmen, Wis.) hit
Jon Elliott (So., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) for a 22-yard touchdown pass in overtime to lift Macalester past St. Scholastica 27-21 in the first-ever overtime game in school history. The Scots reach the .500 mark at 3-3 and used strong red-zone and goal-line defense and five quarterback sacks to make the difference.
These two teams exchanged touchdowns, beginning with a Mac score on its first offensive possession and ending with a CSS score with 4:20 left in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Saints took the ball first in OT and after picking up a first down, were stopped on downs near the goal line. The Scots, starting their possession on the 25-yard line, scored two plays later when Miehe rolled out to the right and found Elliott in the end zone.
The Scots came into the tilt ranked second in the NCAA Division III in time of possession and 21st in third-down conversion success, but St. Scholastica turned the tables those trends and forced the home team to find another way to win. CSS ran off 23 more plays than Mac and had a 23-14 first down advantage, finding most of its success in the second half, and held the Scots to a 3-for-14 third-down success rate. Macalester, however, did go 3-for-4 on fourth down tries.
Macalester's defense forced CSS to come up empty on four of seven trips into the red zone, including an interception at the goal line and 43-yard return by
Jack Carmichael (Sr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) to stop a 11-play third quarter drive.
Martin de la Presa-Pothier (Sr., Twin Falls, Id.) registered 11 tackles, including two for loss of yardage, to lead the defensive charge. De la Presa-Pothier recovered a fumble which he forced.
T. Joe Loiselle (Fy., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) turned in his fourth-100-yard effort, carrying the ball 29 times for 145 yards and scoring the game's first touchdown. Loiselle has 633 yards and six touchdowns rushing through six games.
Miehe tossed TD strikes to
Matt Mitchell (So., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) twice, in addition to his game-winning pass to Elliott. Mitchell's touchdown receptions came from 22 and 25 yards out.
For St. Scholastica (0-4), Mike VanMassenhove caught 11 passes for 158 yards. Chris Henagin ran 25 times for 81 yards.
The Scots travel to the Windy City next Saturday (Oct. 18) to take on the University of Chicago.
