Hamline beat the Scots 37-6 Saturday at Macalester Stadium in the 108th meeting between these two schools in the battle for the Old Paint Bucket Trophy. Hamline has now won the last nine meetings and leads the all-time series, which began in 1887, by a 63-41-4 margin. Hamline is now 2-2 on the season and Macalester is 2-3.
A strong wind blew from the south and combined with wet conditions in the first half, made things difficult for offenses in the first two quarters. Six of the game's seven turnovers were committed in the first 30 minutes and by that time the Pipers were out in front 14-0. Each team had 10 possessions in the first half, but most didn't last very long. On the day, each team tossed three interceptions.
Andrew Seymour, who finished with seven receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns, got the scoring started for Hamline with a 42-yard TD catch late in the first half, just before the Pipers were about to give up their substantial wind advantage. Mark Masso made it 14-0 with a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Hamline's two scoring drives combined to take up just five plays, 90 yards and 1:17 in clock time. Masso also finished with a big day, running 20 times for 90 yards and a touchdown.
A safety caused by a high snap from center gave the visitors a safety and the proceeding punt into the wind set up Hamline's third short scoring drive of the game, this one using up three plays to move 33 yards. Seymour's third touchdown catch, this one from 39 yards away on a ball tipped by the Macalester defender, put Hamline on top safely at 30-6 late in the third quarter.
The Scots scored their touchdown when they drove 80 yards on 14 plays, capping off the drive with a 3-yard Matt Mitchell (Fr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) reception from Trevor Miehe (Fr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.).
Mitchell earlier set a Macalester school record for longest punt when he unleashed a 74-yarder in the second quarter. The old mark for longest punt was 73 set in 1939 by Macalester Hall of Fame athlete Earl Bowman.
A former running back who switched over the defense two years ago, Macalester's Jeff Wankel (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.) ran the ball 34 times for 89 yards and Eric Kelly (Fr., Lyons, Colo.) caught five passes for 64 yards.
Colin Smith (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) picked off a pair of Hamline passes to lead the Macalester defense. Jeremy Velasquez (Sr., Fort Stockton, Tex.) was Mac's leading tackler with nine stops, while Brian Foster (Fr., Shannon, Miss.) made eight tackles.
Macalester plays host to Colorado College on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m.
