Women’s Swimming & Diving: Scots Prepare for Conference Championships at First Chance Meet

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team participated in the University of Minnesota's First Chance Meet, held Friday and Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The meet served as the team's final preparation before next week's MIAC Championships, which will be held at the same pool Feb. 11-14.

Also, the divers competed at the Dodd Road Diving Invitational on Saturday at Carleton.

In Friday's events, first year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.82, with senior Isabella Marcotullio (New York, N.Y./Dominican Academy) taking 12th (5:49.50). Senior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.82, which is the second-fastest time in the MIAC this season. Junior Danielle Koelbel (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) took eighth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:28.80. Senior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) tied for 12th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.62, and first year Ella Franklin (Tucson, Ariz./University) placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.90. The Scots' 400-yard medley relay team of Marcotullio, sophomore Anna Wurtz (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), and sophomores Abigail Martinson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Zahra Wooden (Shoreline, Wash./Holy Names Academy) finished fourth with a time of 4:25.34.

On Saturday, three Scots swam well in the 100-yard butterfly. Henry finished fifth with a time of 58.70, which ranks second in the MIAC so far this season. Senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) was sixth in 59.10, and Uhlhorn-Thornton was eighth in 1:00.01. Sophomore Julia Goh (Williamstown, Mass./Northfield Mount Herman School) placed seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:38.95. Sophomore Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) took eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.56.

At the Dodd Road Diving Invitational on Saturday, sophomore Maya Thomas (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 168.70.

The MIAC Championships begin on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
