Women’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Tops Grinnell with Relay Win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team won the final relay to capture a dual meet with Grinnell College Saturday afternoon at Riley Pool. The Scots won by a score of 153-145.

With Macalester leading 142-141 heading into the final event, the Scots' 400-yard freestyle relay team of seniors Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), and sophomores Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) won with a time of 3:45.50 to give Macalester the team victory. The Scots also opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay by the foursome of seniors Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), Henry and Zurn in 1:52.69.

In the individual events, the Scots won eight events. Henry won both the 50-yard freestyle (25.23) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.62). Shields also won a pair of events, winning the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.39) and the 100-yard freestyle (56.25). Lanz placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.97. Uhlhorn-Thornton was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.87 and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.49). Sophomore Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.92 and was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.63). First year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) took first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.54.

Téllez finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.70 and took third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.93). Sophomore Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College) took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.52) and was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.87).

Others taking third included first year Ella Franklin (Tucson, Ariz./University) in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:26.16), sophomore Anna Wurtz (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.13), and Zurn in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.84) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.96).

First year Ainsley Kashatus (Washington, D.C./Holton Arms School) finished in second place in both the 1-meter diving (379.80) and 3-meter diving (217.95) events.

Macalester competes at the University of Minnesota First Chance Invite on Feb. 6-7 in the final tune-up before the MIAC Championships.
