ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College Director of Athletics Donnie Brooks has announced that Chase Johnson will remain as head coach for the men's and women's tennis programs. Johnson has served as the interim head coach since January.

"We are thrilled to officially name Chase Johnson as our head tennis coach," Brooks said. "Chase has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication in his interim role, and we are confident he will continue to elevate our program."

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as head tennis coach at Macalester," Johnson said. "I want to sincerely thank Donnie, [Assistant Athletics Director] Devyn Smith, and the search committee for their trust and confidence in me. It has been an honor to work with the dedicated student-athletes as well as learn from the great coaches in the department, and I am excited to keep building the momentum that we have created together."

Johnson took over the program as interim head coach just prior to the start of the second semester and led the Scots to several strong performances in a short period of time. The men's team finished 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the MIAC, while the women's team ended up 3-15 and 1-9 in the conference. Junior Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) was named to the All-MIAC Team on the women's side, while seniors Liam Lynch (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy), Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) and Lucas Wood (Urbana, Ill./University Lab School) earned All-MIAC honors for the men's team. Additionally, four members of the men's team and two members of the women's team were selected to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators.

A 2019 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, Johnson earned All-American and Academic All-American honors as a standout for the Gusties. He also received the 2019 ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. In his four seasons as a player, Johnson played on four MIAC championship teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament four times while compiling a singles record of 78-26 and an 86-23 mark in doubles in his career.

Johnson returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach for the men's team from 2019-22, earning ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades in 2022.

Johnson graduated magna cum laude from Gustavus with a Bachelor's degree in statistics. He also obtained a Master's degree in sport management in 2021. Johnson is a native of Hopkins, Minn.
