Women’s Tennis: Macalester Falls to St. Catherine in MIAC Quarterfinals

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to St. Catherine University in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs Tuesday afternoon at the St. Kate's campus courts. The fifth-seeded Scots, who were 5-5 in conference play, end their season at 10-9 overall. The Wildcats advance to face top-seed Gustavus in the semifinals on Thursday.

Since today's dual was an elimination dual in the playoffs, matches were halted once the team result was secured. In doubles, St. Kate's earned 6-2 and 6-0 wins at second and third doubles to secure the doubles point. Seniors Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) were leading their match at first doubles, 4-2 when the doubles point was decided.

In singles, Trevathan was victorious at No. 2 singles, defeating Liliana Holmberg, 6-3, 6-0 for the Scots' first point. But the Wildcats took the singles matches at fourth, fifth and sixth singles to clinch the dual, 4-1 and advance to the semifinals. Macalester was playing in its sixth MIAC Playoffs since the conference began holding playoffs in 2007.

The dual marked the final competition for seniors Haugen, Trevathan and Sedona Crosby (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park), who battled at No. 6 singles before ultimately falling, 6-1, 7-5.
