Box Score ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A 5-2 run over the final two quarters lifted third-seeded Washington & Jefferson past the Macalester College water polo team, 9-6 in the semifinals of the CWPA Division III Championship Saturday afternoon at Augustana College's Anne Greve Lund Natatorium. The Scots (11-9) will play in Sunday's third-place game at 12:00 p.m., while the Presidents (14-6) will play for the CWPA title Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
In the first quarter, sophomore
Hannah Fasi (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School) and junior
Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) scored goals, as Macalester led, 2-1 after one quarter. Over a one-minute span in the second quarter, the teams exchanged goals twice on consecutive possessions, with seniors
Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and
Sian Lewandowski (North Haven, Conn./Williston Northampton) scoring to give Macalester a 4-3 edge. Washington & Jefferson found the net with three minutes left in the quarter to tie the score at 4-4.
A minute into the third quarter, a converted penalty shot gave Washington & Jefferson its first lead of the match, 5-4. Later in the third, the Scots answered another Presidents' goal with a tally from first year
Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) to make the score 6-5. Just before the end of the period, Emma Halle notched her third goal of the match to put Washington & Jefferson up, 7-5 heading into the final quarter.
Matlin scored for the Scots three minutes into the fourth quarter to pull Macalester to within one, 7-6. But the Presidents scored the next two goals while keeping the Scots off the scoreboard over the final five minutes to earn a 9-6 win.
Macalester held a 39-22 advantage in shots taken but was unable to turn enough of those opportunities into goals to get past the Presidents. Junior goalkeeper
Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) registered five saves and had two steals in goal for the Scots.
Macalester will face either Austin or Augustana in the third-place match on Sunday, April 13 at 12:00 p.m.
