Water Polo: Macalester Splits Two CWPA Matches in Texas

| By:
SHERMAN, Texas – The Macalester College water polo team completed play at the CWPA West Regional on Sunday with a loss to host Austin College and a victory over Penn State-Behrend. The results leave the Scots with a 6-3 record overall and a 3-1 CWPA mark on the weekend.

Against Austin (7-7, 4-0 CWPA), Macalester trailed, 3-2 after one quarter despite goals from junior Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and senior Sian Lewandowski (North Haven, Conn./Williston Northampton). Senior Kendall Coney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) tied the score with the first goal of the second quarter. Over the final six minutes of the quarter, the Kangaroos tallied six unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead at the half. A pair of goals by junior Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) helped the Scots pull to within five, 10-5 after three quarters. Then in the fourth, Macalester made a late run with two goals by senior Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and another from Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), to make the score 11-8. But that's as close as the Scots would get, as Austin held on to win, 11-8.

In the win over Penn State-Behrend, Macalester built a 7-1 advantage after two quarters and extended the lead to 13-2 en route to a 17-8 victory. Ten different Scots scored in the win, led by Palmer-Sammons' four goals. Junior Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Gaisser each tallied three goals. Junior goalkeeper Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) played the first half and made four saves, with first year Myles Kratz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) playing the second half in goal.

Macalester begins a five-game spring trip to California on Tuesday, Mar. 18 with a match at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif.
