Women’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Finishes Second at MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team turned in its best finish in the history of the program at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, taking second place on the final day at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Saturday. The Scots scored 679 points and were just 20 points from winning their first MIAC team title. Gustavus repeated as champions with 699 points.

Junior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) won her second individual title of the meet and fourth of her career, finishing first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:20.83. She set the old record of 2:21.63 last year. Also making the A final in the 200 breaststroke were first year Carolyn Wolking (Shoreline, Wash./Holy Names Academy), who took seventh in 2:29.78, and senior Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West), who was eighth in 2:31.31.

Three swimmers posted runner-up finishes in their events. Senior Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) took second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:43.48. Also in the 1,650, first year Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) was third in 17:50.84, and junior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) placed sixth with a time of 18:08.76.

In the 100-yard freestyle, senior Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) finished second in 53.03, her second runner-up finish of the meet. Senior Olivia Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Shorewood) took second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.13. Nuckolls and Zurn also qualified for the A final in the 200 fly, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

In the 200-yard backstroke, senior Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) broke the school record with a time of 2:04.60 to take third. The old record of 2:05.61 was set by junior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) in 2023. Junior Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) made the B final in the 200 back and finished ninth in 2:09.21.

Other swimmers making the B final in their events to score team points include first year Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury), senior Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) and first year Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), who were 11th, 12th and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle; and senior Eleanor Petrin (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka), who was 10th in the 200 fly.

In the 1-meter diving event, senior Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./Madison West) qualified for the final and finished in seventh place with a score of 347.10.

The Scots closed out the meet with a thrilling performance in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Chapon, Merkadeau, Wray-Raabolle and Pollock won with a school-record time of 3:33.26. The previous mark of 3:33.99 was set last year.
