MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team is tied for first after the first day of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Wednesday night. The Scots and Gustavus both have 74 points after two events.
The Scots got off to a great start with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of senior
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), junior
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), senior
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School), and senior
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) won with a time of 1:45.03, breaking the old school record of 1:45.44 set at last year's MIAC Championships. Gustavus placed second in 1:46.17.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the foursome of first year
Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury), senior
Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.), first year
Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), and senior
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) finished second behind Gustavus in 7:45.82. Both relays earned All-MIAC honors for finishing in the top three.
The action heats up at the MIAC Championships on Thursday, with sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
