Women’s Swimming & Diving: Scots Compete at Piper Red Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team competed in an away meet at Hamline University in the Piper Red Invite on Saturday. While team scores were not kept, the Scots had a successful day with ten event wins.

Macalester won both relays in the meet, the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle. The medley team of Megan Chopskie (Cloquet, Minn./ Esko),  Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./ Tamalpais), Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./ Evanston Township), and Addy Malone (Bend, Ore./ Summit) swam a winning time of 1:56.17. Chopskie, Malone, and Chapon also powered the freestyle relay win (1:46.76), joined by Annika Hensel (Houston, Texas/ St. John's School).

Chapon, in her first meet since being named MIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week, also secured a victory in the 50-yard freestyle (25.95) and second place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.76) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.15). Another senior, Uhlhorn-Thornton, coupled her relay win with two individual wins, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (57.11) and the 200-yard IM (2:15.54).

Other Macalester victories include two from sophomore Claire Stretanski (Shavertown, Pa./ Wyoming Seminary College) in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.97 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:50.05, as well as sophomore Dani Koelbel (Duxbury, Mass./ Duxbury) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:36.79).

The Scots also had an outstanding day in the diving events, with both the 1-meter and 3-meter won by senior Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./ James Madison Memorial). She was joined on the podium in both events by senior Lauren Schutz (Madison, Wis./ James Madison Memorial), who recorded a personal-best score in the 1-meter (155.15) for a second-place finish.

The Scots will compete on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Minnesota First Chance Meet in Minneapolis in their last meet before the MIAC Championships.
