Women’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Wins Ahlman Invitational

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team captured the Roger Ahlman Invitational, hosted by Macalester at Riley Pool Friday and Saturday. The Scots registered 1195 points to win the meet, with Morningside taking second out of six teams with 442 points.

In the swimming events, senior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) led the way with three individual wins. She took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.70, won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.68, and finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:25.47. Sophomore Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:42.84 and placed first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:11.38. Senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:10.06, finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.82, and took third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.24. Sophomore Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.27, and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Kayla Chapman (Happy Valley, Ore./LaSalle Catholic College Prep) captured the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.58.

Sophomore Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College) won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.73, took second in the 200 backstroke in 2:31.94 and finished third in the 200 IM in 2:17.92. First year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) led a top-four sweep in the 1650-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 18:12.80. First year Ella Franklin (Tucson, Ariz./University) took second in 18:37.97, sophomore Claire Stretanski (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School) was third and sophomore Anna Wurtz (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) took fourth. Young also won the 500-yard freestyle and was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.73. Franklin also was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:18.96.

Others swimming well included sophomore Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury), who was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.64 and third in the 500 freestyle in 5:19.33. First year Poppy Wedding (Madison, Wis./Middleton) placed second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:50.10 and was third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:36.15. Senior Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) took second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.68 and was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.62. Sophomore Annika Hensel (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) placed second in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.02. Junior Nicole Tilzer (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) finished second in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Megan Chopskie (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) placed second in the 100 freestyle in 56.38 and was third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.57. Junior Addy Malone (Bend, Ore./Summit) finished third in the 100 freestyle in 56.56.

First year diver Ainsley Kashatus (Washington, D.C./Holton Arms School) won both diving events, scoring 400.60 points on the 1-meter board and 354.70 on the 3-meter board.

The Scots won all five relays. The foursome of Chapman, Uhlhorn-Thornton, Zurn and Shields won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:59.78. Nuckolls, Zurn, Téllez and Shields placed first in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:02.03. Chapman, Uhlhorn-Thornton, Zurn and Chopskie took first in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.73. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Chopskie, Uhlhorn-Thornton, Shields and Chapman finished first with a time of 1:41.17, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Shields, Zurn, Téllez and Chopskie won with a time of 3:39.50.

The Roger Ahlman Invitational is the final competition of the semester. The Scots will return to competition on Jan. 17 at home against St. Olaf.
