Men’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Takes Fifth at Luther Invite

DECORAH, Iowa – The Macalester College men's swimming & diving team competed at the two-day Luther Invitational Friday and Saturday, finishing fifth out of eight teams. The Scots registered 446.5 points in the meet, which had preliminary heats and A, B and C finals for most events.

Sophomore Max Taufen (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.05. He also took fourth in the 100-yard individual medley (55.26), finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.71) and placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.68). First year Edward Barnes (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.05.

Sophomore Kean Pajarillaga (Saipan, Marianas Pacific/Grace Christian Academy) also swam well with a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.98. He also was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (52.63) and sixth in the 100 IM (56.01). Senior Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham) took third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.93. Senior TJ Palli (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.79, and sophomore Bode Thompson (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) finished sixth in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.28. Sophomore Boden Allen (Los Angeles, Calif./Redondo Union) took eighth in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.44, and sophomore Jack Schumacher (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) was eighth in the 100-yard butterfly.

In the relays, the 400-yard medley relay team of Pajarillaga, St. John, Schumacher and Palli finished fourth with a time of 3:33.53. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Taufen, Palli, first year Jamie Soutter (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School) and senior Casey Meretta (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took fourth in 3:12.23.

In the diving events, senior Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) placed fifth on the 3-meter board and sixth on the 1-meter board.

Macalester's hosts the annual Roger Ahlman Invitational on Dec. 5-6 at Riley Pool
