Women’s Swimming & Diving: Scots Perform Well in Victory over St. Catherine

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team produced a series of standout performances in a dual meet against St. Catherine Saturday afternoon at Riley Pool. The Scots earned a convincing victory in the team scoring, 187-109.

The Scots opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, as seniors Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) and Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), along with sophomores Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) and Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), combined for a first-place time of 4:07.58. The Macalester B relay of senior Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), sophomore Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College), senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson), and junior Megan Chopskie (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) also turned in a top-three finish, placing second in 4:13.01.

In the individual swimming events, Macalester swimmers won six events. Macalester swept the top three places in the 100-yard breaststroke, as Wolking won the event in 1:11.73, first year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) finished second in 1:13.34, and sophomore Julia Goh (Williamstown, Mass./Northfield Mount Herman School) placed third in 1:15.42. Sophomore Annika Hensel (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) captured the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:25.18. In the 50-yard freestyle, Chopskie won in 25.57 and Shields placed second in 25.93.

The Scots swept the top three spots in the 200-yard backstroke, with first year Poppy Wedding winning in 2:20.40, Téllez placing second (2:20.79), and Zurn finishing third (2:20.89). Uhlhorn-Thornton won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:29.69, while junior Nicole Tilzer (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) took third in 2:44.92. Henry won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.20, and Nuckolls took second with a time of 1:02.34.

Sophomore Anna Wurtz (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) led the Scots in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing second in 12:02.33, while junior Claire Stretanski (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School) touched third in 12:02.93. In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) placed second with a time of 2:03.47, followed closely by Nuckolls in third at 2:03.70. Uhlhorn-Thornton finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:06.25.

Lanz finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.23, and Wolking followed in third at 59.74. In the 500-yard freestyle, Young placed second in 5:30.32, and Shields finished third in 5:31.53. Nuckolls finished second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:55.40), and Wedding placed third in 4:59.48.

In diving, first year Ainsley Kashatus (Washington, D.C./Holton Arms School) won on the 1-meter board with a score of 222.10, while sophomore Alex Koplovsky (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) placed third. In the 3-meter diving event, Kashatus posted another victory with a score of 248.25, with Koplovsky taking third.

The Scots wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Henry, Chopskie, Shields and Téllez combined for a winning time of 1:42.61.

Macalester will compete in the Luther College Invitational on Nov. 21-22 in Decorah, Iowa.
