ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team celebrated their Senior Day well at home on Saturday in a dual meet against Grinnell College. 13 event wins, including seven individual wins from seniors, powered the Scots to a 193-103 win. Senior
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./ Evanston Township) led the way, topping the podium in three individual events and one relay.
Senior
Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./ James Madison Memorial) headlined a great day for Scots divers, opening the meet with a win in the 3-meter diving with 345.75 points. Later in the 1-meter, Yehle once again took first with a score of 194.60.
The Scots swimmers started off hot with a win in the 200-yard medley relay from a team of senior
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy),
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./ Tamalpais), senior
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) and Chapon in 1:50.78. Macalester took the top two spots in the 1650-yard freestyle with a first from
Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) and
Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./ Free State) in second. Dominance continued with a full Scots podium in the 200-yard freestyle from
Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury),
Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), and Nuckolls. Nuckolls and Shields finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.97 and 5:30.31, respectively.
Wins kept coming as Wray-Raabolle finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59:47. Uhlhorn-Thornton followed with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.02. They both repeated with victories in their respective 200-yard events – Wray-Raabolle in the backstroke in 2:12.58 and Uhlhorn-Thornton in the breaststroke in 2:28.99.
Chapon clinched the first of her three individual wins with a 25.09 time in the 50-yard freestyle, followed in second by Merkadeau in 25.65. Chapon topped a Scots-filled podium in the 100-yard freestyle, joined by Tellez and senior
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./ Madison West). Just 0.33 seconds short of the school record, Chapon finished her successful night with a win in the 200-meter Individual Medley in 2:10.93.
The Scots will compete at the Piper Red Invite hosted by Hamline University in St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 1.
