NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team traveled to St. Olaf College on Saturday and came away with a narrow 153-147 win. This positive result in their first event of the new year puts the Scots at 3-1 in dual meets this season.

The meet opened with a strong performance by Kate Yehle in the 1-meter diving, finishing third with a score of 150.35. Yehle also took second in the 3-meter diving later in the day at 196.55.

The Scots first event win came from junior Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:55.60, more than 20 seconds faster than her competition. In the next two events, Macalester placed second and third behind Ole swimmers, through first years Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) in the 200-yard freestyle and through Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) and Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) in the 100-yard backstroke.

The next individual victory for the Scots came in the 100-yard breaststroke by junior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./ Tamalpais) with a time of 1:08.89. Uhlhorn-Thornton also finished first later in the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke. In both events, she was joined on the podium by first-year Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College), who achieved third in the 100-yard and second in the 200-yard.

The Scots added a win in the 50-yard freestyle from Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./ Evanston Township) with a time of 25.36, joined in third by Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) at 25.69. Schmit continued her dominant night in distance events with a win in the 500-yard freestyle.

With only one event remaining, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the event victory was still up for grabs from either team. By less than half a second, the Macalester relay squad of Henry, Chapon, Shields, and Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) were victorious at 3:42.67, sealing the overall meet win.

The Scots will host Grinnell College in St. Paul on Saturday, Jan. 25, for their team Senior Night.
