ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team competed in the ITA Midwest Regional and the Midwest Invite, hosted by Gustavus Sept. 20-22. The event served as the season opener for the Scots.

In singles play in the ITA Regional, junior Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) won her first-round match against Madi Whelan of Central, 6-1, 6-0 before losing in the second round to Noor Omar of Gustavus in straight sets. Junior Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) lost her first-round match to Faith Simon of St. Catherine. Haugen and Trevathan competed int eh doubles tournament and lost in the first round to Olha Zubarieva and Jane Spaulding of St. Olaf.

Haugen and Trevathan moved into the doubles consolation bracket and won a pair of matches against teams from Edgewood and Concordia (Moorhead) before losing in the semifinals of their bracket to a team from Gustavus.

Five Scots competed in the Midwest Invite singles tournament, with seniors Megan Twomey (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) and Camellia Schwartzman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and first years Greta Laurel (River Falls, Ws./Hudson) and Rose Burrows (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) losing in the first round. First year Mary Jacobson (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell-Newburg) won her first-round match over Ella Swarts of Luther in straight sets before losing to Victoria Rizzo of Carthage in the second round.

In doubles, Schwartzman and Twomey defeated a team from UW-Stevens Point in the first round before losing in the second round to a team from Luther. Burrows and Jacobson advanced to the second round with a bye and lost in the second round to a team from St. Olaf. Both duos moved into the consolation bracket, with Schwartzman and Twomey defeating a team from Concordia (Moorhead) and losing to a team from Carroll. Jacobson and Laurel dropped their first match in the consolation round to a team from St. Olaf.

Macalester will play one MIAC dual during the fall, as Concordia will visit Hayden Tennis Courts on Oct. 6. The conference dual begins at 11:00 a.m.
