ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's swimming & diving team saw six school records fall at its own Roger Ahlman invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Riley Pool. The Scots finished second to Gustavus in the team standings with 818 points, and ahead of St. Olaf and Hamline.
On Friday, the 400-yard medley relay team of first year
Kean James Pajarillaga (Saipan, Marianas Pacific/Grace Christian Academy), senior
Charles Batsaikhan (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia/East Chapel Hill), sophomore
Thomas Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) and junior
TJ Palli (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) won in a school-record time of 3:26.62. Senior
Isaac Kisker (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) broke a 15-year-old record in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing first in 21.04. The old record of 21.08 was set in 2009 by
Nathan Young '10. Moore was third in the 50 free in 21.35.
On Saturday, four records fell, including three in the relays. The 200-yard medley relay of Pajarillaga, Batsaikhan, Kisker and Palli finished first in 1:34.17, besting the old record of 1:35.29, set two weeks ago at the Phoenix Fall Classic in Chicago. Max Taufen (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Moore won with a time of 1:24.77. The old mark of 1:25.50 was set last year. Then in the final event of the meet, the Scots' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Batsaikhan, Taufen, Palli and Moore took first in 3:07.17, lowering the old mark of 3:08.80 set last year.
Moore had Saturday's lone individual record, taking first in the 400-yard individual medley with a school-record time of 4:11.29. The old mark of 4:14.85 was set by current sophomore
Will Haby (Denver, Colo./George Washington) last year.
Also on Friday, Taufen took second (1:58.15) and Batsaikhan was third (1:58.50) in the 200-yard individual medley. Haby placed third in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:33.03.
Macalester won several individual events on Saturday in addition to Moore's victory. Taufen won the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.30); Pajarillaga took first in the 100-yard backstroke (52.82) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.43); Moore won the 100-yard freestyle (46.78), with Taufen taking second and Palli finishing third; and Batsaikhan captured the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.13). Runner-up finishes were posted by Batsaikhan in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.80); junior
Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham) in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.61); and first year
Bode Thompson (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.39).
In the diving events, junior
Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) was third on both the 1-meter board (333.90) and the 3-meter board (316.25).
The Roger Ahlman Invitational is the final competition of the semester. The Scots will return to competing on Jan. 18 at St. Olaf.
