Baseball: Macalester Splits with Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team battled with Hamline this evening, splitting a pair of MIAC games. The Scots won game one, 10-1, while the Pipers took game two 21-6. The Scots move to 14-10 (6-4 MIAC) on the season.

The Scots took charge in the first inning of game one, creating a hefty 8-0 lead. Junior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) brought home senior Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) and first year Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to kick off the scoring. Then fellow junior Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) smashed a home run, to double the Scots' lead. After a single and a walk, senior Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) hit an RBI single to plate fellow senior Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School). Then Margolis hit a 2 RBI double to left field, scoring first year Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Palma. Alexander's RBI double that brought home Margolis closed out the eight-run inning.

The Pipers took one back in the third, but the Scots stayed hot. Sophomore Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) homered for two runs, and the Scots won 10-1. Mukai was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Palma went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. First year Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) registered his first collegiate win on the mound, pitching four innings and limiting the Pipers to just five hits.

The Pipers took an early 9-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Sophomore Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit an RBI double in the second to score junior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), while Hamline picked up three runs in the bottom of the inning. Mukai hit an RBI double in the third to plate Margolis, but the Pipers answered in the bottom of third with a run of their own and increased their lead in the fourth by two more runs. Macalester picked up three runs in the fifth to close the gap to 15-5. Senior Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) brought home sophomore Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) off an RBI single and Wingard smashed a 2 RBI single to right field, plating Hager and Alexander. Wingard picked up another RBI in the seventh, scoring first year Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville). However, the Scots couldn't catch the Pipers and fell 21-6. Wingard was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday April 19. The Scots will play Bethel for a MIAC doubleheader in St. Paul. First pitch will be at 2:30 p.m.
