ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team began MIAC play with a three-set loss to visiting Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 9-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Gusties, ranked 14th nationally, improve to 10-2, 1-0 MIAC.

Macalester started the first set well, getting three kills from first year Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) to lead 8-4. But Gustavus scored the next nine points and never looked back, winning the first set, 25-16. The Scots used a 7-1 run in the middle of the second set to tie the score at 13-13, only to have the Gusties close the set on a 12-4 run to win, 25-17. In the third set, Gustavus turned an 8-7 deficit into a 15-9 lead en route to clinching the match with a 25-14 victory.

Macalester managed just 28 kills in the match, including nine from senior Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin), who also led the Scots with 13 digs. Rahe and sophomore Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) each had six kills, with Geber registering three blocks. First year Maya Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) had 25 assists and seven digs, while senior Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) and sophomore Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
