Volleyball: Macalester Fights Back to Beat St. Olaf in Five Sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Trailing by two sets, the Macalester College volleyball team came all the way back to top St. Olaf, 17-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-16, 16-14 Wednesday night in a boisterous Leonard Center. With the win, the Scots improve to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Oles fall to 6-9, 1-1 MIAC.

After dropping the first two sets by the identical score of 25-17, Macalester came alive in the third set. Senior outside hitter Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) registered six of the Scots' 13 kills in the set, as the Scots hit .462 with just one error in 26 attempts in a 25-14 win. The fourth set was more of the same, with sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) putting away four of the team's 14 kills while registering two blocks in a 25-16 victory that forced the fifth set.

Momentum stayed with Macalester early in the deciding set, as the Scots' fans urged their team on. Kills by King, Geber and sophomore outside hitter Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) gave Macalester an 8-5 edge. For the first time since the second set, St. Olaf pushed back, scoring four straight points to lead, 9-8. Kills by King and Geber gave the lead back to the Scots, 12-11, before the Oles responded again with two kills to edge closer to victory, 13-12.

Back-to-back kills from King and sophomore right side Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen) put Macalester on top, 14-13, only to have St. Olaf thwart match point with a kill by Maycie Rogers. However, Wooten put down another kill, and a strong serve by first year middle blocker Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) forced a bad pass and set, giving the Scots the point and the match, 16-14.

After hitting .136 over the first two sets, Macalester built its comeback on efficient offense, closing the match with a .302 hitting percentage over the final three sets. King and Geber each had 14 kills, with Geber hitting .480 and King hitting .353 for the match. Wooten finished with 11 kills, while first year setter Maya Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) dished out 36 assists. Defensively, Geber recorded seven blocks and sophomore libero Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) tallied 19 digs. King, who had 16 digs, and first year defensive specialist Sarah Bohrer (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina), who had 15 digs, also contributed defensively.

Catherine Moore led St. Olaf with 19 kills.

Macalester returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a tri-match at Carleton. The Scots face the Knights in a MIAC match before taking on Luther in a non-league meeting. The first match begins at 10:00 a.m. in Northfield, Minn.
