ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team played a pair of non-conference games at the Rochester Dome Games, beating Cornell, 10-3 and losing to Luther, 7-4 on Saturday. The results give the Scots a record of 2-2 so far this season.
Against Cornell, Macalester opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, with junior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) plating first year
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) with a single, then scoring on a double by junior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep). In the fourth, sophomore
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) and senior
Anna Leidner (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) came home on a couple grounders for a 4-0 lead. After Cornell scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, Brodine's sacrifice fly brought home sophomore
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) to make the score 5-2. The Scots broke the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh, with first year
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and senior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) delivering RBI singles. Morrical, Brodine and senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) also drove in runs in the inning.
Junior pitcher
Joia Simonson (Pardeeville, Wis./Portage) allowed two runs on five hits in four innings of work to earn the win. Brodine, Katzin and Nicholson each had two hits, with Brodine driving in three runs.
In the game against Luther, the Scots erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the third. Church and Brodine came home on errors with the bases loaded, and Morrical hit a two-run, ground-rule double. But Macalester managed just one single over the final four innings, and Luther scored a run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pull away.
Futchko had two of the Scots' three hits in the loss. First year
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend), who pitched three strong innings of relief in the win over Cornell, took the loss against the Norse.
Macalester will play a doubleheader with Buena Vista University on Saturday, Mar. 5 in the Rochester Dome.
