ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team dropped a pair of games to Buena Vista University in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Rochester Dome. The games served as the final tune-up before heading to Florida for the Scots, who are now 2-4 on the season. The Beavers improve to 7-3.
In the first game, Buena Vista took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Macalester put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as sophomore
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) came home on an error and junior
Joia Simonson (Pardeeville, Wis./Portage) scored on a grounder by junior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep). The Beavers added a run in the sixth, then tallied three runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-2. The Scots rallied in the bottom of the seventh, with Katzin hitting a triple to plate first year
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), and sophomore
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) and first year
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) singling home runs to cut the lead to 7-5. With runners on first and second and two out, a strikeout ended the game and Macalester's comeback.
First year
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) went the distance, allowing seven runs, only one earned, and eight hits while striking out four over seven innings.
The Beavers scored four runs in the first inning to take control of Game 2. Sophomore
Lauren Smith (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, her first homer as a collegian. The score remained 4-1 until Buena Vista added another run in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-1 lead. Again the Scots threatened in the final inning, with junior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Nicholson leading off the seventh with singles. Senior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) delivered a one-out single that brought home Brodine to make the score 5-2. But Macalester couldn't capitalize, as the Beavers retired the final two batters to clinch the win.
Brodine and Clarke each had two hits in the second game and three hits on the day. Simonson pitched all six innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on seven hits.
The Scots head to Clermont, Fla., for 10 games at THE Spring Games from Mar. 13-18.
