St. Paul, MN – The Macalester men's soccer team played a non-conference game against University of Minnesota-Morris. The Scots dominated, defeating the Cougars 5-0. The Scots current season record is now 4-4 (1-1 MIAC).
The Scots attacked strong and early, with a shot from senior
Rohit Shah (Sunnyvale, CA/Harker School) in the second minute. Juniors
Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) and
Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker), senior
Ben Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and first year
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, IL/Benet Academy) all got in on the attack. Finally, in the 42
nd minute, the Scots had a breakthrough with a goal from junior
Silas Southworth (Lancaster, NH/West Mountains Regional) off an assist from sophomore
Sam Menicke (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish), giving the Scots a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The Scots picked up where they left off at the break. In the 51
st minute,
Haenicke doubled the Scots lead with an assist from
Dono. Just four minutes later, sophomore
Branko Sciortino put one in the net off an assist from
Shah. Back-to-back goals in the 68
th and 69
th minute from
Southworth and
Stern rounded out the scoring.
Macalester's first year goalkeeper,
Sam Price (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) registered his first start in Scots' uniform, helping to keep a clean sheet. Next up for the Scots will be a conference matchup against St. Olaf. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. in Northfield, MN.
