Men’s Soccer: Conference Overtime thriller Ends in Defeat for the Scots

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On Saturday afternoon, the Macalester Scots traveled to Northfield to play a conference match against the Oles of St. Olaf. This tough battle went into overtime and saw the Scots beaten 3-2.

The Scots took to the offense quickly and put up two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game. Junior Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) found the net in the 12th minute off an assist from senior Omar Anwar (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area). Just over two minutes later, junior Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) beat St. Olaf goalkeeper Austin Williams, with first year Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) recording the assist, to put the Scots on top, 2-0. Just before the half was over, the Scots' lead was cut in half with a St. Olaf goal.

In the second half, the Scots looked to hold off the Oles. However, in the 52nd minute, the game became tied up, when St. Olaf's Ian Elliott, earned a goal back. The two sides continued to battle through the rest of the 90 minutes with senior Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) leading the defense. At the end of regulation, the two teams were at a stalemate. Six minutes into overtime, St. Olaf came down the field and put one past the Scots, ending the game 3-2.

Senior goalkeeper, Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), made six saves throughout the game to keep the Scots in it. The Scots now have a record of 4-5 (1-2-0 MIAC). Their next match will be Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Macalester will host Bethel University in a MIAC matchup.
