St. Paul, MN – The Macalester men's soccer team played a conference game against Bethel University. The match was a tough battle for both teams, but Macalester came out on top, winning 3-1.
Both teams took to the attack from the start. Back-to-back shots from juniors
Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) and
Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) were the first of six attempts for the Scots in the half. On the Scots' defensive end, senior goalkeeper,
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) came up big for the Scots with two saves to keep the game level.
The search for a goal continued into the second half. Both teams battled but it was first year
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) who put the Scots ahead. He was assisted by fellow first year
Alexis Bromberg (Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn) in the 58
th minute. Four minutes later, the Scots were fouled in the box. Senior
Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) stepped up and blasted the penalty kick in for a 2-0 lead. Just after
Orser's penalty kick, the Royals cut the Scots' lead in half. However, in the 84
th minute,
Dono sealed a victory for the Scots, putting the ball in the back of the net from
Haenicke's cross.
The Scots have now improved their record to 5-5-0 (2-2-0 MIAC). Next up for the Scots will travel to Hamline University for another conference matchup. The game will be Saturday, October 2, at 12:30 p.m.
