Joe Margolis Homers Twice but Scots Drop Double-Header Slugfest to Carleton

St. Paul, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team found themselves in a slugfest during their double-header with MIAC foe Carleton College. Despite dropping both games, first year Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) went 4-for-4 with two doubles in game one and sophomore Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) went 4-for-4 with two homeruns in game two. After the double-header loss, the Scots fall to 6-16 (6-16 MIAC). Carleton improves to 4-15 (2-15 MIAC) on the season with their Saturday sweep.
 
In game one, Carleton took a 2- 0 lead in the top of the first. The Scots cut into the deficit to make the score 2-1. Odom singled to center field then junior Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hit an RBI double to left center.
 
In the bottom of the third, Margolis singled to the right side and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Odom then doubled to left center to bring Margolis in. Junior Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) walked and later advanced to second to load the bases on a single from Lincoln. Senior Jack Sahargun (Coto De Caza, Calif./Tesoro) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Odom and give the Scots a 3-2 lead.
 
Carleton scored four runs in the top of the fifth on four hits and one walk to take a 6-3 lead over Macalester. In the bottom of the fifth, Odom doubled to center field then advanced to third on a single from Moreno. Sahargun singled to left field to score Odom and make the score 6-4 in favor of the Knights.
 
In the top of the seventh, Carleton added two more insurance runs to make the score 8-4. The Scots tallied 11 hits compared to the Knights 14 hits.

In game two, the Knights came out swinging and put up six runs on one walk, one hit by pitch, and three timely hits. In the bottom of the second, Margolis hit his first homerun of the season then Lincoln followed with a single through the right side. Senior Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) doubled to right center and moved Lincoln over to third. Senior Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) doubled down left field line to bring in Bucello and Lincoln to make the score 6-3 in favor of Carleton.
 
Carleton scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning on four hits to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Scots got one run back in the bottom of the fourth after junior Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) doubled to right center and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Rosevear.
 
The Knights responded by adding two more runs to take an 11-4 lead over the Scots. Margolis went on to hit his second homerun of the day for his first multi-homerun game as Scot to make the score 11-5 in favor of Carleton. The Knights would eventually extend their lead to 21-5 after the top of the seventh inning.
 
Sophomore Noah Davidson (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) picked up the first hit of his career on a single to right field. First year Tyson Maddox (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) reached first on an error by second base which allowed Davidson to move up to second. First year Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) recorded his first career hit for the Scots on a single to left field to load the baes. Davidson scored from third on the next at bat due to Junior Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) reaching first on a fielder's choice. Helton doubled a few batters later to bring in two runs. Rosevear earned a bases loaded walk to bring in another run but The Scots comeback stopped short and Macalester lost game two 21-9.
 
The Scots will look to take game three of the series tomorrow at 10:00 in Northfield, MN.
