Northfield, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team was able pick up a win today in the third and final game of the series against Carleton College. Strong pitching and timely hitting from the Scots carried Macalester to a 6-3 win. The Scots improve to 7-16 (7-16 MIAC) while Carleton falls to 4-16 (2-16 MIAC) on the season.
Senior
Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) started on the bump for the Scots and game the Scots a strong 6.2 innings pitched. Polk gave up three runs on three hits and struck out five batters. Junior pitcher
Louis Silverman (New York City, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science) came in for Polk to record one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and earned his first win of the season due to the Scots taking the lead the very next half-inning. Sophomore
Declan Ellias (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius) picked up the two-inning save.
The Scots scored first in the top of the fourth inning. Junior
Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) came in as the DH and singled to right field to lead the inning off. Fernando advanced to second on a wild pitch and later score on a single through the right side from senior
Jack Sahargun (Coto De Caza, Calif./Tesoro). The Knights scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Carleton took a 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Scots responded with four runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning. Junior
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) led off the inning with a single to center field. Junior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) then reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Sahargun reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Knights shortstop. A few pitches later, Lincoln scored on a wild pitch and Sahargun advanced to third base. Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) doubled to left center to score Sahargun. After a pitching change, junior
Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) doubled to left center to score Mukai and give the Scots a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the ninth, senior
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) came in to pinch hit and delivered big time with a solo blast off the scoreboard. Helton then doubled to right center and later scored on a Sahargun single. Those two runs put the game out of reach for Carleton and allowed Macalester to win 6-3.
The Scots will hit the road again to finish off the regular season with a pair of MIAC games against St. Olaf College. The double-header on May 5 will start at 2:30 pm.
