Baseball: Macalester Splits with Augsburg and Scores 12 Runs in Game Two

St. Paul, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team dropped game one of the double-header by a score of 8-3 but bounced back to win game two of the day by a score of 12-1. The majority of the scoring took place in the early innings during both games. The Scots earn the series win and improve to 2-1 (2-1 MIAC) after today's split. Augsburg falls to 3-10 (1-4 MIAC) on the season after today's double-header.

After senior Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) sat the Auggies down in order, sophomore Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) drew a walk and later stole second base to get into scoring position. The RBI machine junior Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) singled to bring in Margolis which gave the Scots an early 1-0 lead.

Augsburg answered back with a double from Steven Salz. A single from Michael Weiss moved Salz to third. Carson Tomony then hit an infield single to score Salz and not the game up at 1 apiece.

Sophomore Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) double with two outs in the bottom of the second and later scored on a senior Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./ The Field School) single to left field. Senior Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) later singled up the middle to score Jensen and make the score 3-1 in favor of the Scots.

Augsburg used timely hitting with runners in scoring position to put up four runs in the top of the third inning. Weiss and Ty Gage both came through with RBI's to give the Auggies a 5-3 lead. Augsburg also put up three insurance runs in the fidth inning to put the game out of reach for the Scots.

In game two, the Scots came out swinging. Macalester saw 10 batters step up to the plate in the first inning. Margolis singled and junior Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) followed with a walk. Moreno was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Rodriguez stayed hit with a two RBI double down left field line. Senior Jack Sahargun (Coto De Caza, Calif./Tesoro) joined the fun with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 3-0. First year Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) got his first collegiate hit and RBI on a single up the middle to make the score 5-0.

The Scots extended the lead to 8-0 after Moreno walked, Saharagun doubled, junior Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hit a single, and senior Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) reached on an error to drive in Sahargun.

Macalester added three more runs in the third inning to make the score 11-0. Sophomore Ty Benz (Saverna Park, MD./Severn School) pitched lights out for the Scots. Benz threw five scoreless innings while only giving up three hits and striking out four batters to earn his first career win. Rodriguez also tossed two scoreless innings for Macalester.

The Scots ultimately ended up winning game two by a score of 12-1. Macalester tallied 12 hits and collected eight strikeouts as a pitching staff while only allowing three hits.

Macalester will travel up the road to take on University of St. Thomas for a double-header Wednesday, Apr. 7. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.
