St. Paul, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team dropped two tough games to a strong Gustavus Adolphus College. The deep pitching and stout defense of the Gusties was on full display in both games. The Scots drop to 3-6 (3-6 MIAC) after a pair of losses while Gustavus improves to 11-1 (6-1 MIAC).
In game one both teams pitched well and played strong defense. The Scots struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) singled through the right tide to start the inning. After a failed back-pick from the catcher Hager advanced to second base. Junior
Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, MD./Wheaton) then hit a deep fly out to left filed to advance Hager to third base. Junior
Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) doubled to right center to bring Hager in and give Macalester a 1-0 lead.
The Gusties responded in the top of the fourth with a run of their own to make the score 1-1. Gustavus would go on to score four unanswered runs through the sixth and seventh inning to ultimately win game one by a score of 5-1. Sophomore
Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) did a great job on the bump for the Scots. Windels gave up one run on seven hits while striking out six batters.

In game two, the Gusties got off to a hot start by scoring five runs in the first. Gustavus went on to score six more runs before the Scots got on the board with a run of their own.

Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) got things started in the sixth inning by reaching first after getting hit by a pitch. First year
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) then hit a single to left filed to give Macalester runners at first and second with no outs. Odom managed to come around and score later in the inning on a wild pitch. The Scots ended up dropping game two by a score of 11-1.
The Scots collected six hits in game two. First year
Jack Conner (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) went 2-for-3 with two singles during game two. Macalester tallied 11 hits on the strong pitching staff of Gustavus over the course of today's double header.

The Scots will look to bounce back as they play a three-game weekend series against Hamline University. The Scots will play a double header Saturday, April 17 at CHS field. Game one is set to start at 1:00 pm.
