Scots Drop A Pair of Home Games to Gustavus

St. Paul, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team dropped two tough games to a strong Gustavus Adolphus College. The deep pitching and stout defense of the Gusties was on full display in both games. The Scots drop to 3-6 (3-6 MIAC) after a pair of losses while Gustavus improves to 11-1 (6-1 MIAC).

In game one both teams pitched well and played strong defense. The Scots struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) singled through the right tide to start the inning. After a failed back-pick from the catcher Hager advanced to second base. Junior Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, MD./Wheaton) then hit a deep fly out to left filed to advance Hager to third base. Junior Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) doubled to right center to bring Hager in and give Macalester a 1-0 lead.

The Gusties responded in the top of the fourth with a run of their own to make the score 1-1. Gustavus would go on to score four unanswered runs through the sixth and seventh inning to ultimately win game one by a score of 5-1. Sophomore Thomas Windels (New York, N.Y./Episcopal) did a great job on the bump for the Scots. Windels gave up one run on seven hits while striking out six batters.
