ST. PAUL, Minn. – Seven members of the Macalester College football team were recognized by the MIAC as the conference announced its year-end awards for football today. Senior receiver
Rex Desso (Evergreen, Colo./Lakewood) was the lone Scot on the All-MIAC first team, while junior quarterback
Michael Nadeau (Garden Grove, Calif./La Quinta) and senior defensive lineman
John Newton (Highland Village, Texas/Coram Deo Academy) made the All-MIAC second team. Senior kicker/punter
Jon Neve (Minnetrista, Minn./Mound Westonka), senior receiver
Ty Bruckner (Wichita, Kan./Wichita North) and sophomore linebacker
Noah Bresson (Homosassa, Fla./Crystal River) received All-MIAC honorable mention, with senior offensive lineman
Jacob Bulling (Albuquerque, N.M./Volcano Vista) representing Macalester on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Desso had a breakout season, leading Division III with 100 receptions in 10 games. He also ranked fourth nationally in both receiving yards (1,266) and receiving yards per game (126.6). Along with school records for receptions and receiving yards in a season, Desso broke single-game marks with 18 catches against St. Scholastica on Nov. 6, and 243 yards in the season finale against Carleton on Nov. 13. He also scored eight touchdowns this season and had seven games with at least 100 yards receiving.
Nadeau led the MIAC and ranked 23rd in Division III with 276.8 passing yards per game this season. He also ranks first in the MIAC in completions (243), third in completion percentage (62.6 percent) and fourth in touchdowns (18). Against St. Scholastica, Nadeau completed a school-record 45 passes in a 28-14 win. He also broke the school record for passing yards in a game with 452 against Carleton on Nov. 13. For the season, Nadeau now holds program standards for completions (243) and passing yards (2,768).
Newton was a stalwart on the defensive line for the Scots, registering a team-best 4.5 tackles-for-loss while totaling 24 tackles on the season. A two-time All-Midwest Conference selection, Newton blocked six kicks this season and was named the MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 2 after blocking a kick in the win over Hamline on Oct. 30. He finishes his career at Macalester with 144 tackles, 27.0 tackles-for-loss and 13 blocked kicks.
Neve handled both the kicking and punting duties for the Scots this season. He was 8-of-14 on field goal attempts and 21-of-25 on extra points, making a 41-yard field goal against Carleton on Oct. 2. As a punter, Neve averaged 36.7 yards per punt while placing 18 punts inside the 20-yard line. At Trinity on Sept. 11, he booted a season-best 59-yard punt.
Bruckner, who came into the season with one career reception, was Nadeau's second-favorite target with 31 catches for 421 yards and four touchdowns this season. His best game came against St. Scholastica with eight catches for 110 yards and one touchdown. In the season finale against Carleton, Bruckner caught six passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
Bresson was one of Macalester's most consistent players on defense with 60 tackles, four pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. He tallied 12 tackles apiece against MIAC Skyline Division leaders Bethel and Concordia, and had three pass breakups in the win over Hamline on Oct. 30.
Bulling made a successful transition from linebacker to the offensive line, starting at center for all 10 games this season. Bulling graded out as the Scots' top offensive lineman nearly every game this season, and the team benefitted from his leadership and knowledge of the game.
Macalester finished 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC Skyline Division in its first season back in the MIAC since 2001.
