ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College senior defensive lineman John Newton (Highland Village, Texas/Coram Deo Academy) was selected the MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced today. Newton helped the Scots defeat Hamline, 23-13 with a blocked extra point.

Following Hamline's touchdown in the third quarter, Newton broke through the line and blocked the extra point for his sixth blocked kick of the season. The six blocked kicks are the most by any player at any NCAA level. As one of the Scots' interior defensive lineman, Newton registered a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry on Saturday.

A two-time All-Midwest Conference selection, Newton has blocked 13 kicks in his career at Macalester.

Newton and the Scots return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 with a game at conference newcomer St. Scholastica. The MIAC cross-divisional game starts at 1:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
