ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College football team announced its team awards for the 2019 season at its year-end banquet on Saturday, Jan. 25 in Kagin Hall. Junior defensive lineman
John Newton (Highland Village, Texas/Coram Deo Academy) was named the Scots' Most Valuable Player.
Newton, who was also repeated as the team's Defensive MVP, was named to the All-Midwest Conference second team for the second year in a row after leading the team with 64 tackles. He also registered a team-best four sacks and 10.5 tackles-for-loss to rank in the top 10 in the league in both categories. A force in the middle, Newton ended up with four blocked kicks this season.
Junior offensive lineman
Carter Gale (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) was selected the Scots' Offensive MVP after making the All-Midwest Conference first team this fall. The starter at center for the Scots in each of his three years at Macalester, he has been the anchor of the offensive line. Gale's leadership and strong play helped the Scots rush for 280 yards in a win over Cornell on Oct. 5.
Sophomore defensive back
Nathan Gottlieb (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) received the Attack Teams/Brick Award for his solid play on special teams. His versatility allowed him to fill multiple roles in the Scots' coverage units, and he made several plays that prevented long returns. In the game at Cornell College on Nov. 16, Gottlieb caught a pass on a fake punt that resulted in a first down and eventually led to a touchdown.
This year's Newcomer of the Year Award went to quarterback
Michael Nadeau (Garden Grove, Calif./La Quinta). Nadeau threw for 726 yards and four touchdowns while also running for three touchdowns in six games as the Scots' signal caller. His best game came against Lawrence, where he threw for 207 yards and rushed for a touchdown in a 16-6 victory.
