Men’s Soccer: Scots Earn Second Tie with Nationally-Ranked Opponent

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team tied #8 Luther 1-1 on Sunday afternoon, marking the second time that the team has tied a nationally-ranked opponent so far this season. This was the third overall tie that the Scots have had on the year, opening the season with a 0-0 tie against #3 Chicago and also tying Washington University in the first weekend.

In today's game, the Norse were the first to strike, scoring on a free kick just outside the box in the 65th minute. They would hold onto this lead for a little over ten minutes before senior Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) challenged the goalkeeper and found the back of the net to tie it up. This was Moore's second career goal and first of this season.

The Scots put early pressure on the Norse, getting to take two corners within the first six minutes of the game. The second corner led to a header shot from Jack Muller (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), but it went wide. About five minutes later, Macalester earned another corner, once again getting a header off, this time from Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial), but it was saved by Luther goalkeeper Carson Davenport.

The Norse had a few good chances in the first half as well, but their best was when Benjamin Keller took an open shot in the 34th minute but it was saved by Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) to keep the half scoreless.

In the second half, the Scots once again put pressure on the Norse defense early, with sophomore Danny Peak (Marion, Ill./Linn-Mar) taking two early shots. Luther took two shots fairly early as well, but capitalized on a free kick to score their goal.

Moore, who had been an aggressive presence on Luther's end of the field all game, was finally rewarded for his efforts in the 77th minute taking a shot that ricocheted off of the goalie but found its way into the bottom right corner of the net.

With regulation time quickly dwindling, the Scots continued to attack and had a free kick go through the opposing goalie's hands into the net, but what would have been the go-ahead goal was called off due to the goalkeeper getting fouled.

Neither team was able to score in either of the overtime periods with Peak being the only player for either team to even get a shot off.

As a team, the Scots held a 13-7 edge in shots and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks throughout the contest.

Macalester will continue this non-conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday, September 11th when they travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
