Men’s Soccer: Macalester earns 2-0 win over St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. -  The Macalester men's soccer team earned their first win of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating St. Scholastica 2-0 in Duluth. The Scots were led by goals from senior Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) and Max Starks (Green Bay, Wis./Preble), who each scored in the second half.

With the win, the Scots are now unbeaten in their last five contests with the Saints and are 7-4-1 against St. Scholastica in their all-time series history.

Macalester held an impressive 19-8 advantage in shots throughout the game, but the Saints held them to only five shots on goal in the 90 minutes.

In the first half, the Scots took eight shots and five corner kicks, but were held scoreless despite these chances. Macalester's defense allowed only three shots in the half, none of which were successful leaving the game 0-0 at the break.

The Saints had the first shot of the second half, but it was Macalester that scored first as Bajek rocketed a shot into the top right part of the goal in the 57th minute to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. This was the senior's first goal of the season and the third of his career. Bajek's goal was assisted by sophomore Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) for his first point recorded as a Scot.

Less than ten minutes later, Starks added to that lead, getting the ball past the goalie into the lower part of the net in the midst of a scramble in the box from a Macalester corner kick. This was the Wisconsin native's first collegiate goal.

St. Scholastica took four more shots in the half, but the Scots held strong to earn the shutout win.

Sophomore Mitchell Kastilahn (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) tallied four saves in net for his first collegiate shutout and first win of the season.

The Scots will return home to play Carthage on Sunday for their final non-conference game of the season. Kick off will be at 12 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
